Lane Closure - Monday, February 1, 2016

On Monday, February 1, 2016, the turn lane in front of The Bower Center for the Arts will be closed for the laying of brick on the front of the new addition to the Bower Center. The lane will be reopened for access through the night. This should be completed within a couple days, providing the weather cooperates. Please expect delays if traveling in this area.


Some Bedford residents have received phone calls from scammers saying they are with the Bedford Electric Department & that their power would be cut off if payment wasn't made to the caller immediately.

Bedford Electric Department wants to assure residents that they do not call residents in this manner and all payments are to be made only through the Town of Bedford. If residents have any questions regarding their account, please call: 540-587-6057.

Important Reminder -
Dog Licenses Due Jan. 31, 2016

The 2016 Town of Bedford Dog Licenses must be purchased on or before January 31, 2016 per Bedford Town code 6-44 and State code 3.1-796.86.

All dogs are required to have a license. The tags may be purchased at the Town of Bedford Treasurer's office in the Town Municipal Building, 215 E. Main St. Office hours are Monday thru Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. except holidays.

A valid Rabies Vaccination Certificate must be presented to obtain a license. The cost is $10.00 for male or female and $5.00 for spayed or neutered dogs.

Public Hearing Notice

Notice is hereby given of a public hearing to be held by the Town Planning Commission at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 7, 2016 and by the Town Council at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at the Town Municipal Building, Council Hall, 215 East Main Street for the purpose of:

To consider an amendment to the Commercial/Light Industry District, CLI, Section 610.02 and to the Manufacturing District, M1, Section 611.02, of the Town of Bedford Land Development Regulations, by adding gymnasiums, swimming pools and other indoor sport facilities, provided they are conducted completely indoors, as a permitted use.

Information regarding this request is on file in the office of Planning & Community Development. Anyone who is in favor of or opposed to this request will have an opportunity to express his/her view at this hearing.

The Town of Bedford will be rolling out new trash carts starting this week. Monday and Tuesday routes will get theirs this year, with the rest being deployed next year. Self-Service Dumpsters

At a meeting in June the Town Council elected to remove the self-service dumpsters from the Orange Street landfill effective July 1, 2015. Town residents are encouraged to use the landfill during normal operating hours (7:30 - 12:00 M-S) and to use the County drop off centers at 1974 Falling Creek Road (7 - 7 daily) and the main County Landfill located at 1060 Recycle Road off VA 43 (24 x 7) at other times. The recycling bins will remain in place.

An ID proving town residency must be presented when disposing garbage through the Town of Bedford Landfill. All customers are subject to charges for disposal.

The Bedford Fire Department strongly encourages all residents to check the operation of their smoke detectors. If any resident is in need of assistance with changing detector batteries or installing new ones, you may call: 540-586-3433 to arrange for someone to come to your home to do so (no fee).
