Bedford County Courthouse
The Bedford County Courthouse, built in 1930, is the fourth courthouse building.
Elements of its Classical Revival style include Flemish-bond brickwork, an Ionic-order
porch, Corinthian-order columns on the roof cupola, and a large triangular pediment with a
decorative frieze. On the courthouse lawn are several monuments honoring the brave men of
Bedford who have served in the country's wars. A portion of the rock from Sharp Top
mountain, which was included in the Washington Monument, recognizes the Battle of Point
Pleasant. Noteworthy is the D-Day memorial, commemorating Bedford's considerable losses on
that day. In 1994 Bedford was selected as the site for a National D-Day Memorial.
