Like most localities, the majority of crimes in the City of Bedford are crimes of opportunity and are usually related to property. Some tips on how NOT to become a victim are:

• Always lock your automobile, even at home.
• Avoid leaving your purse or other valuable items in your automobile.
• Avoid parking in unlighted or isolated parking lots.
• Always lock your house when leaving.
• If leaving town, try to find a neighbor who will keep an eye on your house.
• Stop deliveries of papers and mail when going on a trip.
• Make an inventory of your property complete with serial numbers.
• Be suspicious of anyone offering you something for nothing, there is usually a catch.
• Be alert for con men and women attempting to make you a deal "you cannot turn down" on paving your drive, painting or roofing your house, etc.
• Be careful of telephone solicitations. Check and make sure the company or organization is legitimate. Avoid giving your credit card number over the phone.
• Legitimate sweepstakes do not require winners to front money. If you have to send money to claim a prize, chances are you are going to be ripped off.
