Serving the citizens of Bedford
Public Works enhances the quality of life
for the citizens of the City of Bedford by providing safe and
reliable infrastructure such as streets and utilities. Public
Works also provides many services that make life more convenient
like curbside refuse and recyclable collection.
The City of Bedford Public Works Department
is six divisions: Public Services Division, Engineering Division,
Landfill Division, Water Treatment Division, Wastewater Treatment
Division and Building and Grounds Division.

PUBLIC SERVICES
DIVISION
The Public Services Division is organized
into five different operations: street maintenance, water and
sewer utility maintenance, refuse collection, recycling
and automotive maintenance. If you have a question about one

Street Maintenance
The street maintenance operation
is responsible for repairing pavement failures such as cracks
and potholes, constructing and repairing storm sewers, and removing
ice and snow from the roadway during winter storms.

| The water and sewer utility maintenance
operation is responsible for fixing water line breaks and leaks,
repairing and installing fire hydrants, repairing sewer lines,
and installation and maintenance of water and sewer lines.

Refuse Collection
|
The refuse collection operation
is responsible for collecting refuse from households and businesses
and hauling the waste to the landfill. This service is provided
once a week.
The City of Bedford also offers
special refuse collection services such as: spring and fall clean
up week, year round brush collection, and bulk leaf collection
in the fall.

The recycling operation collects
recyclable materials from households and businesses once a week.
The recyclables are hauled to a recycling facility where they
are processed.

Automotive Maintenance
The automotive maintenance operation performs routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs to City owned vehicles.

ENGINEERING DIVISION
|
The Engineering Division provides
technical support to the citizens and all City of Bedford departments.
Some of the Engineering Divisions
responsibilities include designing, implementing and inspecting
public works projects such as roads, storm drainage systems,
water lines and sewer lines. The Engineering division also surveys
public works project sites and prepares easements for public
works projects. The Engineering Division also reviews site plans

| The Landfill Division is responsible
for solid waste disposal. The landfill is constructed and operated
in accordance with all current environmental regulations. A strong
emphasis is put on recycling at the landfill. All brush and wood
pallets received are ground into decorative mulch that is available
to the public for free. Leaves and yard debris are composted
and the compost is available to the public for a small fee. Old
tires are collected and sent to a tire recycling facility. For

WATER TREATMENT DIVISION

|
The Water Treatment Division is
responsible for supplying safe drinking water and fire protection
to the citizens and businesses of Bedford. The water treatment
plant is operated in strict accordance with Virginia Department
of Health regulations. The City's primary source of drinking
water comes from Stoney Creek Reservoir, a 25-acre impoundment.
Water flows from the reservoir by gravity to the treatment plant
on Turkey Mountain where it is treated and filtered. The water
treatment plant has a capacity of 3.0 million gallons per day
and currently produces an average of 1.2 million gallons per

| The Wastewater Treatment Division
is responsible for treating household, industrial and commercial
wastewater in strict accordance with Department of Environmental
Quality and Virginia Health Department regulations. The wastewater
treatment plant has a capacity for treating up to 1.5 million
gallons per day. The wastewater is first screened, then grit
is removed, next, it is processed in primary clarifiers, then
aerated and processed in secondary clarifiers, filtered and disinfected
before discharging into the Little Otter River. For more information,

BUILDING AND GROUNDS DIVISION
