General Information

New residents to the City of Bedford may register to vote at the office of the General Registrar on the 2nd floor of the City Municipal Building at 215 East Main Street. Voter registration forms are also available at government agencies such as the Department of Motor Vehicles, US Post Office, Social Services offices, and public library branches. Qualified citizens may register to vote any time of the year except the 29 days prior to each election. You must be 18 years old by the election date and a US citizen. The Office of Elections for the City of Bedford is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Absentee Voting:

If you will be absent from the City on election day or are physically unable to vote in person at the polls, you may apply for an absentee ballot. You must meet the following criteria:

  • Student away at school and spouse
  • Out of town on business
  • Out of town on personal business or vacation
  • Commuting to work for 11 or more hours between 6 am and 7 pm
  • Unable to go to polls due to physical disability or illness (you may make an annual application for an absentee ballot due to physical disability or illness)
  • Primary caretaker of a confined family member
  • Awaiting trial and under confinement
  • Serving time for misdemeanor conviction
  • Electoral Board member, Registrar, or Officer of Election
  • Religious obligation
  • Active duty US Armed Forces or Merchant Marine and spouse or dependent
  • Employed in business outside the continental US and spouse or dependent
You may vote by absentee in person or by mail:

  • To vote in person: come to our offices and complete the absentee ballot application. If qualified and the ballots are ready, you may vote at that time.
  • To vote by mail: to request an absentee ballot application, call, write, fax, or email our offices
