The Bedford County Extension Office is offering a private household water testing program in August. If your household water comes from a well, cistern or spring and you are interested in learning more about the quality of your water, consider participating in this one time testing opportunity. Curbside Recycling Ends June 30

As part of long-term cost reductions, the Town of Bedford will no longer do curbside recycling service in the Town. We will still be doing curbside trash pickup on your regular day. Your utility bill will reflect a $4 reduction (for the recycling cost). You can still use the self-service recycling drop-off center on Orange St. for glass, metal, plastic, paper and cardboard ... and we hope you will! You may keep your recycling bin and put it to some other use, or you may bring it to the Public Works department to be recycled. The Town will not pick the bins up, however. Please don't use your recycling bin for curbside trash pickup; the bins are not sturdy enough for that. If you have any questions, please call 540.587.6081.

Traffic Alert: Traffic Pattern Change Scheduled for Route 460 in Bedford County

As part of the project to realign the crossover and construct turn lanes on Route 460 near Ole Turnpike Drive in Bedford County, the speed limit will be reduced and a new traffic pattern will be in place beginning Monday, June 9.
The traffic pattern change will begin near Ole Turnpike Road and will include closing the westbound lanes of Route 460 and moving east and westbound traffic onto the eastbound lanes. This will restrict traffic to one lane in each direction. The speed limit in the work zone will be reduced to 35 mph. These changes will allow crews to reconstruct the westbound lanes.
The new traffic pattern will be in place for several months. The estimated completion date for this project is December 2014.

Real Estate Tax Bills

If you have a mortgage: Please rest assured that although you got a copy of your Town real estate tax bill for 2014, a copy was sent to your lender as well. If your lender normally pays your real estate tax from escrow, you do not need to come in to pay the tax, it will be handled as it normally is. The bill you got is just a copy. If you do not have a mortgage and normally pay your real estate tax yourself, then you'll need to come in and pay it by the due date. We apologize for the confusion this may have caused this tax year.

A company has been mailing offers to a lot of our citizens to obtain a copy of their home deed for only $83. According to our Circuit Court, that's about $80 too much.
