Message from the Chief

Welcome on behalf of the men and women of the Bedford Police Department. This is my first year as the Chief of Police and I have set a goal to have a professional police department that continues to make the Town of Bedford a safe place to live, work, and play. The Town of Bedford is located with the Blue Ridge Parkway to the north and Smith Mountain Lake to the south. The Town of Bedford has the honor to have The National D-Day Memorial in the town. The Town of Bedford is one of the best places to live in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Police Department is comprised of 24 sworn police officers and 3 civilian staff members. All members of the police department work hard to ensure all of the emergency and non-emergency police related needs are responded to and handled quickly and efficiently. As Police Chief I have five values I want each member of the police department to follow. The values are Respect, Integrity, Teamwork, Courage and Innovation.

The members of the police department have all heard a quote from Sir Robert Peel, which is his 7th principle, "The police are the public and the public are the police; the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence." We work to partner with the citizens of the Town of Bedford because we understand we cannot be effective without the support of the public. As the Chief of Police I am building this culture within the department.

We are proud to serve this community and protect those who live in town, work in town and those who are visiting town and the local attractions. We are striving every day to provide the highest quality service. Officers understand our five values and understand that we are servants of the public and hold the privilege to serve and protect this community as an honor.

F. Todd Foreman
Chief of Police

Community Awareness:
The Neighborhood Awareness program has succeeded for many years, due to the willingness and commitment of residents and businesses to work together as a whole community to ensure that Bedford remains a strong, safe and enjoyable place to live an work.
In the beginning, the focus was on creating awareness groups for each neighborhood. But we found out what effects one neighborhood affects us all. Beginning in 2014, we will address issues as a whole community. Which leads to the new name, Community Awareness.
Please click HERE for a list of upcoming meetings and the new 2017 Community Awareness Flyer.

Another new service by your Bedford VA Police Department: Try this link to see what crimes are occurring in the Town or in your specific neighborhood. To start, type Bedford, VA in the address block, then use the drop down menus to query the crimes and the dates that you want to see. Currently, data has been loaded back to May 1, 2013 and is uploaded every morning. If you have difficulty call us at 540-587-6011 and we will walk you through the process.

Business Watch:
For years, the Neighborhood Awareness program sponsored by the Bedford Police Department has proven to be one of the most effective means of crime prevention available for residents. Now we're initiating Business Watch, a crime prevention alliance of local businesses and their employees and the Bedford Police Department to help reduce and prevent crimes occurring in our business community.
If you are a business owner or merchant, we encourage you to attend. Together we can work towards securing your business against crime. Please click HERE for a list of upcoming meetings.
